I spent part of the recent long weekend on the Dolphin Coast of KwaZulu Natal and had lunch on Saturday at a new eatery, Mundo Vida in Umdloti. The theme of the restaurant is ‘world food’ and the menu ranges from a Vietnamese starter platter to steamed langoustines. Game dishes and good old classics like pork belly are also served, as are Thai dishes like pad thai.
We had booked a table on the large, covered deck and the views from here are beautiful. Mundo Vida is a spit away from the beach so I can only imagine how packed it will be come high summer!
Although there is a set menu with two courses for R100 or three courses for R125 we all ordered separately. I had salt and pepper calamari served with an Asian salad and the other two members of the party ordered the Vietnamese starter platter which is for two people. For mains I chose the fresh line fish of the day which was, as one would expect so close to the sea, beautifully fresh and tasty.
Served on a bed of Asian vegetables (or with match stick fries), this meal was light and exactly what I was after. Other meals ordered were a spicy prawn Pad Thai and Mozambiquen chicken. Both were cooked to perfection but the Pad Thai was a bit too spicy for my liking.
We washed this all down with a Pierre Jourdan Tranquille which at R85 per bottle was not too expensive and ended the meal with coffees and a crème brulee each.
Mundo Vida was lovely; gorgeous views, slick service, linen napkins and thin rimmed wine glasses and excellent food. I enjoyed it tremendously.
