The Horse and Mill in Colesberg is a perfect local pub and probably one of the only pubs in the town. Dinner was served at our accommodation in Colesberg (the fabulous Kuilfontein Stable Cottages) on a recent stop in Colesberg. But my brother who has driven the Cape Town to Johannesburg route numerous times is now familiar with The Horse and Mill and wanted to introduce me to it.
There is a seperate bar and restaurant area (I presume to conform to smoking laws) and we opted to sit in the bar area where there was a bit more of a country pub vibe.
There were approximately six tables in the bar area, a few of them underneath a fairly large mill, flags of various countries hang from the ceiling, the walls are covered in graffiti from people who have stopped by for a ‘dop’ and because The Horse and Mill used to be used for the annual Harley Davidson Convention, Harley paraphernalia is present!
To be completely honest I didn’t really have a good look at the menu because as far as I’m concerned when in the Karoo, there is only one thing to eat and that’s Karoo lamb. So, both my brother and I had lamb casserole with, wait for this, mashed potato, sweet potato, potato mashed with green beans, carrots and pumpkin. Not what one would call a low carb diet! It was delicious and we devoured every last morsel!
We could have stayed at our accommodation and enjoyed the three course meal on offer but as far as I’m concerned if you are going to drive through the Karoo then you may as well have dinner and a drink at the local and meet a few people. Everyone we met was also passing through the town but the solid, no nonsense, friendliness of the barmaid gives one a sense of the Karoo mense!
I don’t know what else there is to do in Colesberg (and by no means am I saying there is nothing else to do) but if you find yourself stopping in this N1 town make sure you pop into The Horse and Mill for a carb-laden meal and ‘n bietjie geselskap!
