Locals breeze in throughout the day for their fix of Tribe organic coffee, legendary breakfasts and catch-up chats with friends. Bikini and board-short clad surfers make their way to Empire for much needed sustenance between catching waves, greeted by owner and surfer, Dave Jones, as they shuffle in.
With the addition of free wifi, customers can be seen typing away at their laptops from morning until the 4pm closing time. Empire Café’s secret ingredient is that it offers more than just a great cup of coffee; its relaxed and welcoming atmosphere make it a community favourite.
Dave, who is not only the owner but also the hard-working chef, has dedicated eight years of his life to the restaurant and his hands-on approach is evident. All the delicious pastries are made on site and so are the sauces, pickles, spreads, bread and pasta. Empire also stocks many much-loved local beverage brands, including Lady Bonin Tea, Everson Cider, Darling beer and Jack Black beer.
Scribbled on a chalkboard every morning and afternoon, the deli style menu entices the hungry with hearty breakfasts and scrummy lunches. The BBQ and mushroom burgers, served with hand-cut crispy chips and a side salad are a must-have, with the lip-smackingly delicious linguini and fettuccini dishes following closely behind.
Having recently undergone aesthetic changes, Empires revamped look, with its cool grey walls, new balcony, painted exterior and pastry displays, reflects its modern sensibilities along with a playlist that ranges from The Cure and David Bowie, through to The Shins and PJ Harvey.
