A friend from Durban was in town on business yesterday and we booked a table for five at Jakes to have a catch up dinner.ย I hadnโt been to Jakes for close on three years (why I donโt know; its always such a pleasure to dine there) but it was as I’d remembered it โฆ and those delicious flat breads are still on the menu!
Jakes on Summerley is a stylish restaurant that wraps itself around a Brazilian Pepper Tree โ very clever design indeed giving a quaint al fresco dining area between the bar area and restaurant.ย We were seated indoors and our waiter Tendai saw to our drink order.
The menu is extensive with a number of specials up on the board.ย For starters I tried one of the specials; a beetroot, coriander and feta soup!ย It was so tasty and a lot sweeter than I had anticipated.ย It was also probably the prettiest soup Id even been presented with!ย Other starters included a tuna kebab on a bed of vermicelli noodles, duck spring rolls and calamari.
I had been toying with the idea of Norwegian salmon on sushi rice or pork belly on a bed of mash for main but in the end the sirloin with sliced brown mushrooms and cheddar cheese got my vote (Im a sucker for melted cheese of any kind!).
Two of my dining companions had the fillet with blue cheese, one ordered the same dish as I did and one chose the Jakes speciality: crispy duck.ย All main courses were served with vegetables and perfect potato wedges.
Although prop vol after all of that we called for the dessert menu and ordered dom pedros and Irish coffees.ย Id actually ordered a Kahlua coffee (I was counting calories after all that cheese) but Tendai got the order wrong and I landed up with a Kahlua Dom Pedro instead.ย Maybe heโs just a mind reader and knew what I really, really wanted!ย Nice work Tendai.
