THE BEST evening PICTURES CAN BE TAKEN AT the beach with a captivating sunset over Robben Island. Not only has it been used as a prison, where former South African president Nelson Mandela spent 27 years imprisoned, but it was also a training and defense station during World War II, a hospital.
OTHER HAPPY SNAPS AT Small Bay or Big Bay. Big Bay falls within a Marine Nature Reserve and is only 20 minutes away from the Cape Town city centre and since it is so close to Melkbosstrand can also be called the start of the Cape West Coast.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S GOOD, I LIKE TO have an exhilarating run along the promenade.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S BAD, I LIKE TO sneak away to Bayside or Canal Walk. Alternatively, I warm up by going to Virgin Active or I cook up a storm.
I THINK THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT IS anytime of the year is pretty good, BECAUSE there is always something for everyone to do.
MY FAVOURITE BREAKFAST SPOT IS Primi Piatti on Beach Boulevard for amazing views or Kauai which offers wholesome and delicious meals.
FOR LUNCH, I SUGGEST Carluccis for the best sandwiches in the area.
MY FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IS ColโCacchio for delicious pizzas and the Blowfish Restaurant, TRY THE try their signature platters โ they even have something for vegetarians.
BEST LATE NIGHT SNACK FROM Steers, while waiting have a drink at Pakalolo next door. This is a fun, vibe place where you can relax and have a some fun with friends.
MY FAVOURITE SPOT TO view the spring flowers IS in the beautiful Darling area which is a relatively short drive up the Cape West Coast.
FOR A NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN TRY Cubana. This is a great cocktail and cigar bar where you can spend some time with friends eating food or party into the night with some really good music.
IF YOU WANT TO MEET LOCALS, GO TO Doodles on the beachfront or Buckleys. Doodles is a landmark in Blouberg and has been operating for more than 2 decades. The staff are friendly and there is always a great atmosphere and view.
Bloubergstrandโs BEST KEPT SECRET IS the very scenic walking or running strip stretching from Dolphin Beach all the way to Big Bay. If you feel adventurous and energetic you can go even further!
MY FAVOURITE THING TO DO WITH FRIENDS IS to hang out at the Blue Peter. This is one of the oldest sites in Bloubergstrand dating all the way back to the 19th centuary. You will always find it bustling with people on the weekends and they offer a variety of food from snacks to pizzas and of course delicious seafood.
FOR SOME CULTURE, I LIKE TO GO TO the Milnerton Playhouse and Evita se Perron in Darling.
TO RELAX AND RESTORE MY SOUL, I LIKE TO go for long walks along the beach, especially when the mist comes rolling in.
IF YOU’RE FEELING ADVENTUROUS, TRY try kite surfing, stand up paddle surfing or Dune boarding. On any given day you will see plenty of kite surfers out in the water. It is an increasingly popular activity as the conditions in Blouberg are perfect for this sport.
MY FAVOURITE WALK IS Koeberg Nature Reserve. This is also the home to Koeberg Power Station and also offers hiking trails. Don’t forget to look out for Grysbok, Steenbok, Bontebok, Springbok and Zebra.
MY FAVOURITE book SHOP IS Books Galore at the West Coast Village. It is open from Monday to Friday from 09h00 to 18h00, Saturdays from 09h00 to 16h00 and Sundays and public holidays from 09h00 to 14h00.
MY FAVOURITE bird WATCHING SPOT IS Flamingo Vlei. Come and see these beautiul large birds with long legs and neck in pink and white.
IF YOU’RE HERE IN September, JOIN IN THE FUN AT the Voorkamerfest. This is a fabulous event which offers visitors something completely different. You will go along a route and watch a variety of performances at different locations at a number of homes of people living in the area. Definitely something to come and check out – but remember you need to book early for this!
MY FAVOURITE LIBRARY IS the Table View library. CHECK OUT THE DVD selection.
MY FAVOURITE BUILDING IS house resembling a Spanish castle in Branderlaan, FOR ITS unusual style.
TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN? A FUN OUTING IS the West Coast Ostrich Farm. Here you can enjoy a guided tour (they run every half and hour) come and learn all about this animal.
BEST CHEAP AND CHEERFUL OUTING IS a picnic at the rock pools at the beach.
WHEN MONEY’S NO OBJECT, I LIKE TO buy property in Blouberg.
THE MOST UNUSUAL THING I SEE HERE IS Dolphins swimming along the shore. Apart from that. I always have a chuckle when I see the โBeware of Sharksโ signs.
MY FAVOURITE WEEKEND GETAWAY IS escaping to Darling especially over the Voorkamerfest and Flower Festival.
