Hi, I’m Barbara from New Voices Publishing, and I live in Philadelphia. Philadelphia lies about 20 minutes outside of Cape Town, past Durbanville, just off the N7 towards Malmesbury.
Philadelphia IS BEST KNOWN FOR its anonymity. This small historical village has been preserved in its original state. That’s what we love about the village.
GET YOUR PICTURE TAKEN AT the Pepper Tree Art Stable and Coffee Shop. This is where people meet for lunches and coffees – a beautiful area with great ambiance and stuff you can browse through, old books or works of art …
THE BEST FARM PICTURES can be taken at on top of the hill as you drive to the farm road at the end of the village.
OTHER HAPPY SNAPS around the quaint streets. The homes are all beautifully resorted.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S GOOD, I LIKE TO I like to sit on my deck with my hubby and a great coffee, reading the paper and watching the chickens…
WHEN THE WEATHER’S BAD, I LIKE TO I like to sit by the fire with a magazine.
I THINK THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT Philadelphia is September, because the fields are a glorious yellow with the canolla, the baby lambs are born and the red bishops and yellow weaver birds are all busy with their nests.
MY FAVOURITE BREAFAST SPOT IS The Pepper Tree Coffee Shop.
FOR LUNCH, I SUGGEST any of the pastas at The Pepper Tree.
MY FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IS … still the Pepper Tree – try the chicken coronation pie.
IF YOU WANT TO MEET LOCALS, GO TO the Pepper Tree Art Stable. You can buy local jams and honey – my favourite. We all meet in the street outside the post office!
Philadelphia’s BEST KEPT SECRET IS is the crystal shop – Magic Minerals.
OUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO WITH FRIENDS IS browse the crysal shop.
FOR SOME CULTURE I LIKE TO wander around the art gallery – these are all local artists.
TO RELAX AND RESTORE MY SOUL, I like to sit under the Pepper Tree outdoors and just enjoy the atmosphere. You are surrounded by nature and art and good people.
IF YOU’RE FEELING ADVENTUROUS try a pottery class with the local potter, Ferdinand.
MY FAVOURITE DRIVE is the trip to Durbanville. You travel between farms and the winding road is full of colour and nature.
MY FAVOURITE SHOPPING IS browsing shop is the crystal shop – Magic Minerals, for sure. I can spend hours in there.
MY FAVOURITE BIRD-WATCHING SPOT IS is my own back garden when I feed the chickens – all the neighbourhood birds come to eat too!
IF YOU ARE HERE IN SEPTEMBER, JOIN IN the fun at the famous Philadelphia Kerk Bazaar on the 1st Friday in September. This is a tradition in the village – great food, huge fire, great gesels.
MY FAVOURITE BUILDING IS Die Meul, it is the original mill but revamped. It has a great restaurant and also hosts weddings and dinner functions.
I Love Philadelphia because it’s my home!
