Hi, I’m Jan Fourie from Camelia Guest House in Bloemfontein in the Motheo Region of the Free State.
Bloemfontein IS BEST KNOWN FOR its friendly inhabitants and its historical sandstone buildings which comprise good material for art photos. If interested in capturing people relaxing at open restaurants, visit the three major shopping centres namely Mimosa Mall, the Waterfront or Preller Square.
GET YOUR PICTURE TAKEN AT Oliewenhuis. The gardens are neat, spacious and well kept. You will find lovely corners in the gardens where you can relax and compile your own setting for photos. Art objects next to the art museum also offer opportunities for creative photos.
THE BEST nature PICTURES CAN BE TAKEN early in the morning at the botanical gardens.
OTHER HAPPY SNAPS AT the zoo.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S GOOD, I LIKE TO take a walk at one of the hiking trails in the botanical gardens or go to one of the many restaurants in the open.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S BAD, I LIKE TO Traumerei at the Waterfront. They serve lovely treats.
I THINK THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT IS during autumn, BECAUSE the weather is excellent then. You can sit outside even in shorts till late.
MY FAVOURITE BREAKFAST SPOT IS the Wimpy at the Pretty Garden Nursery.
FOR LUNCH, I SUGGEST a picnic at the Waterfront.
MY FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IS New York, TRY any of the steaks on the menu.
BEST LATE NIGHT SNACK FROM Euoro Café in Mimosa Mall.
MY FAVOURITE SPOT for camping and fishing IS Maselspoort on the Airport Road.
FOR A NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN TRY Cubana in Second Avenue.
IF YOU WANT TO MEET LOCALS, GO TO Barbas.
Bloemfontein’s BEST KEPT SECRET IS its kind people.
MY FAVOURITE THING TO DO WITH FRIENDS IS go for a Sunday lunch at the Oliewenhuis Restaurant. Here you can visit art exhibitions and take a stroll through the lovely gardens.
FOR SOME CULTURE, I LIKE TO GO TO to the Sand du Plessis Theatre or visit some of the productions at the annual Volksblad Art Festival on the campus of the University of the Free State.
TO RELAX AND RESTORE MY SOUL, I LIKE TO sit on the bench next the small pond in the Botanical Gardens.
IF YOU’RE FEELING ADVENTUROUS, TRY a tandem parachute jump at the Tempe airport or take a zoo snooze.
MY FAVOURITE DRIVE IS to the Boeremark in Langenhovenpark on Saturday mornings.
MY FAVOURITE clothing and food SHOP IS the Waterfront Woolworths.
MY FAVOURITE stadium for WATCHING SPOT IS the Vodacom Stadium next to the Waterfront Shopping Centre.
IF YOU’RE HERE IN the second week of July, JOIN IN THE FUN AT the Volksblad Vryfees.
MY FAVOURITE MUSEUM IS the Oliewenhuis Art Museum. CHECK OUT THE permanent as well as the temporary exhibitions.
MY FAVOURITE BUILDING IS the Mimosa Mall, FOR ITS good design and it is filled with very interesting shops, restaurants and movie theatres.
TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN? A FUN OUTING IS a visit to the Wimpy or Traumerei restaurant at the Pretty Garden Nursery where you can keep an eye on your children while they enjoy the children’s playground (swings, battery powered carts, jungle gym, etc.).
BEST CHEAP AND CHEERFUL OUTING IS to the Boeremark on Saturdays.
WHEN MONEY’S NO OBJECT, I LIKE TO go to the Coco C restaurant at the Waterfront.
THE MOST UNUSUAL THING I SEE HERE IS a lack of heavy traffic.
MY FAVOURITE WEEKEND GETAWAY IS to the Allemanskraal Dam.
WHEN I WANT TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY, I donate money to the Free State after Care Centre.
I Love Bloemfontein because it offers all the necessary qualities needed to live a quality life – excellent municipal services, excellent educational institutions, medical services of a high quality, good road and air transport facilities and most important – its kind people. Guest Houses in Bloemfontein offer excellent value for money. Because Bloemfontein is in the centre of the county, it is very popular for conferences.

I really enjoyed this! Have to go to Bloem on business soon and this gave me some really good ideas about what to do. Am definitely going to go to Oliewenhuis for lunch and then take a walk through the exhibitions afterwards! Sounds great.
