I Love Howick Because …

Updated Sunday, 30 December 2018

Hi, I’m Nicky Wallis from Sunbird Guest House in Howick in the Natal Midlands.

Howick IS BEST KNOWN FOR being the the hub of the Midlands and waterfall country and of course its know for its approximately 100m high Howick Falls, and its proximity to the Midmar Dam (home of the Midmar Mile swim) and nearby outings like a drive through the famous Midlands Meander and the Umngeni Footprint Route or the Umngeni Nature Reserve.

There are many other falls to view in the area such as Karkloof Falls (approximately 105m), the Shelter and Cascade Falls as well as the Forgotten Falls. For the more adventurous there is the Karkloof Canopy Tours and Guided Tours to the bottom of Howick Falls. You can also make arrangements to swim and picnic below the falls.

GET YOUR PICTURE TAKEN AT either the Howick or Karkloof Falls, with spectacular views in the background, or in front of the monument at the Mandela Capture site on the Midlands Meander.

THE BEST daytime PICTURES CAN BE TAKEN AT any of the venues mentioned.

OTHER HAPPY SNAPS AT anywhere along the Midlands Meander Route.

WHEN THE WEATHER’S GOOD, I LIKE TO visit any or all of the wonderful venues mentioned and more.

WHEN THE WEATHER’S BAD, I LIKE TO enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants in and around Howick or on the Midlands Meander.

I THINK THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT IS all year around, BECAUSE there is always something to see or do in or around Howick.

MY FAVOURITE BREAKFAST SPOT IS Sunbird Guest House or the Fern Hill Hotel.

FOR LUNCH, I SUGGEST Piggly Wiggly, Fern Hill Hotel and the highly acclaimed Corner Post Bar and Restaurant or a little further afield is the Bierfassl in Nottingham Road.

MY FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IS the Black Olive for its cosy atmosphere and great fare (bookings essential) or TRY THE Delish Dish or 68 on Main for great homely cooking.

MY FAVOURITE picnic SPOT IS Midmar Dam where water sports (yachting, water skiing and fishing) and long hikes can be enjoyed after feasting on some of our great local fare available in quaint farm stalls and shops. Other than being the home of the Midmar Mile swim it is a popular venue for triathlons, mountain biking and other sporting events.

FOR A NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN TRY KwaZulu Natal’s capital city of Pietermaritzburg.

IF YOU WANT TO MEET LOCALS, GO TO 68 on Main Pub and Restaurant or wander around the many tourist attraction in the fields of arts and crafts, antiques and collectibles among others.

Howick’s BEST KEPT SECRET IS is the Karkloof Falls and the awesome vistas and fields of green vegetation both natural and farmed on any of a number of short drives from Howick.

MY FAVOURITE THING TO DO WITH FRIENDS IS is enjoy any one of the above outings or enjoying a good meal with good wine at one the above mentioned eateries.

TO RELAX AND RESTORE MY SOUL, I LIKE TO I like to hike through any one of several trails in the area and enjoy the very diverse bird population and wild life on offer.

MY FAVOURITE BUILDING IS the Pietermaritzburg City Hall, FOR ITS spectacular beauty, towers, turrets and its the largest brick building in the world.

WHEN I WANT TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY, I spend time and money supporting our local community shops and talented local vendors of African curios etc.

I Love Howick because it is my home and offers so much to see and do and it is a beautiful part of our magnificent country side.
