Hi, I’m Jack Hogan from Umhlanga Rocks, KwaZulu Natal
Umhlanga Rocks IS BEST KNOWN FOR the great holiday vibe, swimming in the warm Indian Ocean and having one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world.
GET YOUR PICTURE TAKEN AT the lighthouse, with one of the most beautifully scenic views up the coast and with views of Durban.
THE BEST view PICTURES CAN BE TAKEN AT sunrise with the sun rising over the sea.
OTHER HAPPY SNAPS AT the Umhlanga Pier – looking back at the coastline.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S GOOD, I LIKE TO swim in the warm Indian Ocean and stroll along the promenade.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S BAD, I LIKE TO go shopping at Gateway Theatre of Shopping or try my luck at Sibaya Casino. Gateway boasts 380 world class stores as well as a cinema complex and countless restaurants. You will be spoilt for choice. Sibaya offers the excitement of gambling and there is always something good on at the theatre.
I THINK THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT IS spring, BECAUSE the days are warm and clear with still, crisp evenings.
MY FAVOURITE BREAKFAST SPOT IS Lighthouse Café on the beach front with views of the sea and the many ships waiting to enter Durban Harbour. The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner but please note that because its located outside it is weather dependent.
FOR LUNCH, I SUGGEST Angelos. Located in the Granada Square, Angelos has just had its 18th birthday! It offers authentic Italian cuisine ranging from pastas, pizzas, steaks and seafood.
MY FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IS Olive and Oil, TRY THE sole. The restaurant opened its doors in 2005 and has been serving delicious, fresh food ever since. The atmosphere is busy but intimate.
BEST LATE NIGHT SNACK FROM any one of the 24 hour takeaways.
MY FAVOURITE nature SPOT IS the Hawaan Forest. This is a unique, indigenous woodland area that is home to a large number of animals and just as many birds. The walking trails are not open to the public but guided walks can be arranged.
FOR A NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN TRY visiting the many bars and restaurants in and around the village, all within safe walking distance from one another.
IF YOU WANT TO MEET LOCALS, GO TO The George Tapas & Wine Bar.
Umhlanga Rocks’s BEST KEPT SECRET IS the great vibe and the friendliness of the locals.
MY FAVOURITE THING TO DO WITH FRIENDS IS play golf on some of the world’s top golf courses in the surrounding areas.
FOR SOME CULTURE, I LIKE TO GO TO the Inanda Heritage Route and other interesting sites in the Umhlanga area.
TO RELAX AND RESTORE MY SOUL, I LIKE TO enjoy sundowners at the Lighthouse Bar at the Oyster Box Hotel. The Lighthouse Bar has beautiful views along the beach – a perfect place to relax with a cocktail or a glass of bubbly.
IF YOU’RE FEELING ADVENTUROUS, TRY snorkelling and diving at the T-Barge, the Trawler of Fontao or many more exciting dive spots off the Umhlanga coastline.
MY FAVOURITE WALK IS along the beach to the Hawaan Forest and the lagoon.
MY FAVOURITE food SHOP IS the UK Food Emporium where you can get all the goodies you are missing from the UK.
MY FAVOURITE dolphin and whale WATCHING SPOT IS from the quieter northern beaches in Umhlanga.
IF YOU’RE HERE IN December, JOIN IN THE FUN AT the Umhlanga Summer Carnival.
MY FAVOURITE GALLERY IS The Art Room. CHECK OUT THE work of Dumisani Mabaso.
MY FAVOURITE BUILDING IS The Oyster Box Hotel, FOR ITS colonial architecture.
TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN? A FUN OUTING IS to uShaka Marine World.
BEST CHEAP AND CHEERFUL OUTING IS tenpin bowling at Gateway. You’ll find this in the Fantasy Forest section of the complex.
WHEN MONEY’S NO OBJECT, I LIKE TO enjoy a sumptuous dinner at the Sugar Club at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Hospitality and attention to detail are the hallmarks of the Beverly Hills Hotel and the restaurant offers wonderful views of the ocean. The food is rated among the best in South Africa.
THE MOST UNUSUAL THING I SEE HERE IS the great cosmopolitan vibe and the friendliness of the locals.
MY FAVOURITE WEEKEND GETAWAY IS to Phinda Game Reserve or to go on a weekend boat cruise from Durban.
I Love Umhlanga Rocks BECAUSE it rocks. The lifestyle is relaxed and laidback. Umhlanga Rocks is in close proximity to world renowned game reserves, Lake St Lucia which is a World Heritage Site and the Drakensburg Mountains.
