Hi, I’m Anyas from Citrusdal in the Western Cape.
Citrusdal IS BEST KNOWN FOR being the gateway to the Cederberg and for its citrus fruits of course!
GET YOUR PICTURE TAKEN AT Wupperthal, a picturesque mission village where excellent velskoen (known throughout the country) are made and tobacco is dried and worked into rolls (roltabak). The other main products of the area are dried fruit, dried beans and rooibos tea. At Christmas time there is a festival of carol singing at the mission and the mountains echo to the voices of the people of Wupperthal. This is a place rich in culture, history and hospitality.
THE BEST rock formation PICTURES CAN BE TAKEN AT Maltese Cross. The Cederberg Wilderness offers spectacular rock formations with the Maltese Cross being one of them. Permits are often needed for gaining access to various wilderness areas – please check with Cape Nature Conservation.
OTHER HAPPY SNAPS AT Nature’s View or canoeing at Wolfkop.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S GOOD, I LIKE TO go play golf, hike in the Cederberg and picnic at the waterfall, ride my mountain bike along the old Pass or go horseback riding. We are never short of something to do here.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S BAD, I LIKE TO go play squash, then spoil myself with a massage at “Exclusive”, Anzelle can also brings her massage table to you and after that sit by the fireplace at “Die Sitrus” and reward myself with a rooibos latte and a homemade crème brulee.
I THINK THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT IS anytime, BECAUSE Citrusdal has something for all seasons, but my personal favourites are Autumn because it has the most beautiful days, the trees are busy turning a new leaf, fire places are starting up, warm comforting food on the stoves, first citrus fruits are being picked… August, September because it’s flower season, the weather is very nice, all of the surrounding fields are full of different flowers, it is so colourful! The heavy scent of orange blossom fills the valley, it is unbelievable!
MY FAVOURITE BREAKFAST SPOT IS after the garden of Olifantsrus surrounded by orange trees and birds, it will have to be “Die Sitrus”, especially on Saturday because they have a market on the front lawn, you can order whatever you want, they also have live cooking stations with “crepes” and doughnuts, everything is freshly baked. Best chicken pie ever! I also like to go to The Grapevine, it’s a small coffee shop, very intimate with nice food.
FOR LUNCH, I SUGGEST I suggest Bydidam, it’s a new venue built on a dam with a stunning view, I can spend hours sitting on their terrace.
MY FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IS Die Sitrus, TRY everything! But if you have to choose, try the steaks … it’s their specialty. If you’re there on a Wednesday, they always have theme nights going, Tapas, Sushi, fondue night.
MY FAVOURITE lookout point SPOT IS Uitkyk punt, on a clear day; you can see the sea.
FOR A NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN TRY Die Sitrus and the bar at Bydidam is also quite happening.
IF YOU WANT TO MEET LOCALS, GO TO go to Uitspan Coffee Shop, next to the tourism office. They often sit there during the day.
Citrusdal’s BEST KEPT SECRET IS still a secret!
MY FAVOURITE THING TO DO WITH FRIENDS IS have a braai at Uitkyk point … the view is just breathtaking.
TO RELAX AND RESTORE MY SOUL, I LIKE TO well actually, a round of golf does the trick for me. Citrusdal Golf Course is one of the best nine hole courses in the Western Cape.
IF YOU’RE FEELING ADVENTUROUS, TRY mountain biking in the Cederberg; that should do it! If not you can always go bouldering or drive up some of the 4 x 4 trails in the area.
MY FAVOURITE ride IS mountain biking through Citrusdal’s Old Pass. Its a bit steep but when you’re on top it’s worth every muscle ache!
MY FAVOURITE nursery SHOP IS Citrusdal Kwekery. It has the most beautiful flowers, pots and garden decorations for a very decent price!
MY FAVOURITE bird WATCHING SPOT IS as Olifantsrus. Sit on the stoep and watch the birds’ life go by …
IF YOU’RE HERE IN August, JOIN IN THE FUN AT the Citrus Carnival.
MY FAVOURITE MUSEUM IS actually not finished yet! Johnny van Wyk and his dad have a passion for John Deere tractors and have almost all of them on their farm, which they’ve restored. Johnny loves to talk about his passion so if you get a chance, get him to give you a tour!
TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN? A FUN OUTING IS taking them to The Citrusdal Baths. Children love that place, it’s a hot spring resort with a lot of space and attractions for kids to play.
BEST CHEAP AND CHEERFUL OUTING IS to swim in the river and go to the waterfalls … always a winner!
WHEN MONEY’S NO OBJECT I LIKE the donkey cart excursion in the Cederberg Mountains. It’s a lot of fun …
THE MOST UNUSUAL THING I SEE HERE IS is the farm workers singing in the truck that takes them to town on Friday during picking season!
MY FAVOURITE WEEKEND GETAWAY IS well, we live in the countryside so we love going to Camps Bay when we can get away! Feeling the city vibe recharges our batteries …
WHEN I WANT TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY, I contribute to an organisation called ‘street smart’ which raises funds to give street children a viable life in our society.
I Love Citrusdal BECAUSE its a little town with beautiful surroundings, there is so much to do and so much still to be done!
