Hi, our names are Aissa and Ughetta Parenti from Bluegum Hill Guesthouse in Green Point.
GREEN POINT IS BEST KNOWN FOR … lately, for The World Cup Soccer Stadium.
GET YOUR PICTURE TAKEN AT Signal Hill overlooking Green Point, the City of Cape Town and Table Bay!
WHEN THE WEATHERโS GOOD, I LIKE TO walk along the Promenade and watch the pooches and people at play.
WHEN THE WEATHERโS BAD, I LIKE TO visit The Point Virgin Active Gym on Bill Peters Drive for a steamy sauna or sun bed stint to chase the chills away. On the way, rent a classic movie and pop in to Woolworths in Somerset Road for some quality comfort food!
I THINK THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT GREEN POINT IS … as soon as you can get here, because there’s just no place quite like it!
MY FAVOURITE BREAFAST SPOT IS on our balcony at the Guest house (see photo) with its stunning views of Cape Town. When you stay with us you will enjoy a personally prepared breakfast – in good weather we serve breakfast alfresco out on the sunny balcony from where you can watch the world wake beneath you whilst you contemplate your day …
FOR LUNCH, I SUGGEST Bravados Cafe, Restaurant & Bar in Somerset Road, Green Point. Try their ever generous Prawn & Chip Special with Kobus Marais’ famous chilli sauce and enjoy the laid back, trendy vibe!
SOME OF MY FAVOURITE RESTAURANTS ARE Beluga Restaurant (Prestwich Street, Green Point). It’s a stylish affair in a one hundred old red brick building. Great for meeting up with friends for a slice of the playboy millionaire lifestyle. Then Portofino Restaurant & Bar (10 Hospital Street, Green Point) is set in a contemporary chic white and glass palace. Enjoy Mediterranean style fare with an inventive edge and out-the-box cocktails. And not to be missed is Mario’s Italian Restaurant who has been serving real soul food in classic Italian casual style for over 30 years!
FOR A NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN, TRY Jade Champagne Bar & Lounge on Main Road, Green Point. Enjoy the chic French-Chinoiserie decor and groovy tunes for party animals over 23 and dance till you’re hot enough to cool off on the open-air balcony. Also give the Buena Vista Social Club on 81 Main Road a try. Start the evening with Tapas and then let your hair down to sultry Latin music, in Cuban style!
IF YOU WANT TO MEET LOCALS, GO TO Cape Towns’ best loved foodie institutions. For example, hang out at Giovanni’s Deli (on Main Road) for all day coffee or lunch in trendy Italian-style. Itโs a favourite with the locals! Or hang out at Manos Restaurant – another favourite with the locals for lunch and dinner.
The cool dรฉcor and inviting bar is a lively and smart weekend spot. You canโt go wrong with the short and reasonably priced wine list which had some excellent local options and good selection of wines by the glass. Great cocktail bar as well. Find Manos at 39 Main Road in Green Point.
GREEN POINTโS BEST KEPT SECRET IS the history of the Green Point Common. Prior to 1600 it was a sandy plain where the now extinct Cape lions roamed. The first rugby match in South Africa took place on the common in 1862 and then in 1899 at the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer war, Green Point Common was set up as a military base. By 1930 it was the peaceful grazing ground of cattle ad apparently abundantly studded with our indigenous Arum Lilies.
FOR SOME CULTURE OR LIVE MUSIC, I LIKE TO GO TO “On Broadway” at its new venue at 88 Shortmarket Street. This is Cape Town’s premiere tongue-in-cheek cabaret and theatre venue.
MY FAVOURITE THING TO DO WITH FRIENDS IS to go to Pigalle Restaurant at 57 Somerset Road. Itโs great for an evening of red carpet glamour, dinner and dancing.
TO RELAX AND RESTORE MY SOUL, I LIKE TO stock up on health treats, vitamins and a helpful chat with the friendly crew at Hypermed Pharmacy on the Main Road, Green Point. Get some expert advice and good old fashioned care!
MY FAVOURITE SUNDAY SHOPPING IS AT the once weekly Green Point Stadium Flea Market. It’s not to be missed for its fantastic offering of crafts, African art and local talent.
TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN? A FUN OUTING IS to play a round of Putt Putt at the well loved outdoor miniature golf course next to the seaside in Mouille Point. Itโs for children AND the young at heart of all ages!
BEST CHEAP AND CHEERFUL OUTING IS a visit to the Green Point Lighthouse. This is South Africa’s oldest lighthouse, declared a national monument in 1973. Stroll around the lighthouse and end off with a picnic watching the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean!
WHEN I WANT TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY, I support Ons Plek Shelter for Girls and The Haven Night Shelter.
I Love Green Point because it is a sunny, funky suburb with everything you could possibly need in easy reach and it’s a great base to explore the best of the Mother City.
