During my stay at the Old Mac Daddy we were treated to a river barge cruise at nearby Mofam Farm, which is both accommodation and a ski school. The photographs speak for themselves as the water was crystal clear and reflected the surroundings with mirror-like quality.
On board with us were the resident hounds of Mofam Dolce and Gabana two Labradors who thoroughly enjoy this water adventure. We were also treated to some wine and snacks, the snacks were devoured as there was a large selection of cheese, olives and biscuits. A firm favourite must have been the brie and fig preserve combination as this was quickly reduced to nothing.
Mofam is as mentioned both a lodge and ski school, I had no idea that you were able to learn how to water ski in such a beautiful setting. The farm was originally purchased as a family property where their children could continue with their sport โ water skiing and after hiring a personal coach for the children the ski school developed.
The school is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 09h00 to 18h00, I would certainly recommend going earlier during the day. During winter when the sun sets earlier it can get very chilly, especially if youโre in the water. However it is advisable to book, especially during peak season, as they are often fully booked with functions.
Other activities to keep you busy would be skiing tournaments including slalom, jump and tricks, bass fishing, canoeing, quad biking, hiking and more.
The drive is a bit of the beaten track and youโd need to pay careful attention to where you are going and avoid shortcuts because you will probably find yourself in a dead end. But as it is only about an hours drive away from Cape Town anyone who is keen on skiing or learning how to ski will find this not only a beautiful setting but a warm and welcoming one.
This must also be a great way to spend time with friends doing something quite different from the norm. If skiing isnโt for you then I definitely suggest taking a barge sunset cruise with them while youโre staying at the Old Mac Daddy, they will be happy to arrange this for you. And for only R70 per person, including a drink and snacks this is not to be missed.
If youโd like to book some ski lessons then the number to dial is +27 (0)21 846-8345. I think Iโll stick to the barge cruise, I enjoy my relaxation, and Iโll leave the high adrenalin stuff for the sporting enthusiasts!
