Hi, I’m Gerhard from Qambathi Mountain Lodge in Kamberg in the Drakensberg.
Kamberg IS BEST KNOWN FOR its Bushman Rock Art, fly-fishing and breathtaking mountain scenery.
GET YOUR PICTURE TAKEN AT Highmoor or on one of our game drives with Giant’s Castle in the background. The views are really something special with Mount Eskirne and Mount Cleopatra very dominant everywhere you look.
THE BEST nature PICTURES CAN BE TAKEN by just driving around Kamberg. There are so many treed lanes, wild flowers, cloud shapes and Berg views for that perfect picture.
OTHER HAPPY SNAPS AT the trout dams or at the Bushman Rock art which is the best preserved in the country.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S GOOD, I LIKE TO take a hike through our natural forest or up the mountain.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S BAD, I LIKE TO read a book around the log fire in the lodge or sit on the chill deck and watch the weather play out.
I THINK THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT IS during the summer months, BECAUSE of the beautiful scenery and also during the winter months for those glorious mid-winter days and night time log fires.
MY FAVOURITE BREAKFAST SPOT IS under the trees in the garden – there are always plenty of birds around.
FOR LUNCH, I SUGGEST taking a picnic in the forest, next to the river or trying one of the many Midlands restaurants.
MY FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IS Firkin’s at Nottingham Road for some German cuisine or the lamb curry at Rawdons Hotel.
BEST LATE NIGHT SNACK FROM our kitchen!
MY FAVOURITE Midlands SPOT IS Abingdon Wines for wine tasting and a superb mezze platter.
FOR A NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN TRY the Notties Hotel.
IF YOU WANT TO MEET LOCALS, GO TO The Knackered Swan at the Kamberg Store with John and Joe.
Kamberg’s BEST KEPT SECRET IS the secluded and underdeveloped beauty of the valley.
MY FAVOURITE THING TO DO WITH FRIENDS IS to take a game drive up the mountain and enjoy a snack platter while enjoying the views with a glass of wine.
FOR SOME CULTURE, I LIKE TO GO TO one of the many concert evenings on in the Midlands.
TO RELAX AND RESTORE MY SOUL, I LIKE TO sit in the river at the waterfall in our natural forest on the reserve.
IF YOU’RE FEELING ADVENTUROUS, TRY hot air ballooning on offer in the valley.
MY FAVOURITE DRIVE IS up Highmoor where fantastic views and waterfalls are to be seen.
MY FAVOURITE wine SHOP IS Abingdon Wines.
IF YOU’RE HERE IN May, JOIN IN THE FUN AT the annual Kamberg Trout Festival or Glengarry Mountain Bike Challenge.
MY FAVOURITE GALLERY IS The Knackered Swan. CHECK OUT THE Bushman Rock Art Centre at Kamberg Nature Reserve.
TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN? A FUN OUTING IS taking a hike to the top of the Plato at Highmoor – enjoy the waterfalls, dams and stunning views. You can also take a horse ride at Drakensberg Excursions with Heidi and Patrick.
BEST CHEAP AND CHEERFUL OUTING IS going fly-fishing at Brackenburn Dams in the valley with Attie and Avol.
WHEN MONEY’S NO OBJECT, I LIKE TO take a helicopter flip around the Drakensberg.
THE MOST UNUSUAL THING I SEE HERE IS the number of stars visible on a clear evening.
WHEN I WANT TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY, I support the local community school feeding programme.
Other: On offer in the valley is Bushman Rock Art, fly-fishing, nine-hole golf, horse riding, hot air ballooning, game drives and hikes. Kamberg is situated in close proximity to all the offerings of The Midlands Meander.
I Love Kamberg Because of the beautiful nature, being secluded and friendly people.
