Reubens at One&Only in Cape Town

We had friends from the Lowveld stay with us for the weekend and they very kindly took us to Reuben’s at the One&Only for dinner on Friday night. I’ve eaten at Reuben’s in Franschhoek and the Cape Town operation (which opened on October 1^st) is just as good.

Occupying the area where Gordon Ramsay’s maze used to be, the restaurant was full with people still lingering at tables when we left at about 11.30pm. The space is sophisticated and Reuben serves simple, wholesome, delicious food with fresh flavours and more than generous proportions.

The menu is large enough to give one enough a selection but not that big that you are left not knowing what to choose! For starters I had a scallop, calamari and potato salad with chorizo sausage and salad leaves. It was sensational! The others had cured venison, a dozen oysters and the chilli salted baby squid. Starters range between R60 and R80.

I stuck to my normal main course meal; a 240g sirloin steak served with a béarnaise sauce and summer greens. One can never go wrong with a piece of steak and this was presented grilled to absolute perfection. My husband had the 180g beef fillet while our companions enjoyed their pork belly and rack of lamb. We ordered creamed spinach, baby carrots in a vanilla butter and mash with truffle oil (I’ve never in my life tasted mash this good!) as side orders to share and these are all served in small cast iron pots. The main courses are priced between R110 and R175.

My sweet tooth won the battle of the dessert and I was very happy with my Amarula scented malva pudding. The boys had had their fill so finished off their meal with coffee. Other dessert options are Lemon and olive oil custard, Muskadel crème with poached hanepoot grapes and a very generous cheese platter. Petit fours were also served.

The service was excellent; the waitrons friendly and knowledgeable about their product.
