Villiersdorp is a small town in the heart of the Overberg region, just outside Cape Town in the Western Cape. It is nestled within the Villiersdorp Valley and is well known for its deciduous fruit farming and its spectacular views. This is not a busy spot in terms of tourism, but it is a must for those that enjoy spending time outdoors, gulping down the fresh air and savouring the sweet smells and sounds of South Africa.
The Theewaterskloof Dam is one of the features of Villiersdorp, and is significant for being the seventh-largest dam in the country. Apart from being spectacular in its aesthetic beauty, this dam is also a popular water sport site for dinghy sailing, canoeing, jet skiing, angling, kite surfing, water skiing and windsurfing.
This area is also home to a fabulous 9-hole golf course, which allows those who are pros, or simply those that enjoy a round on the greens as a pastime to take in the surrounding beauty while keeping active. The course is right next to the Theewaterskloof Dam and is, therefore, fabulously central for the entire family.
The whole of the Western Cape is known for its fertile soils and optimal weather conditions for vines, which yield world-class wines. Visitors to Villiersdorp are encouraged to go on a wine tour (or two) to sample some of the local goods.
The landscape of the Overberg is particularly mountainous; making it ideal for mountain climbing, hiking, walking and abseiling. Those with a 4 x 4 vehicle will no doubt enjoy exploring the formal trails of the region, which showcase its splendour to perfection.
Helderstroom Alpacas is situated just outside Villiersdorp and invites visitors to see and interact with adorably cuddlesome alpacas. These creatures are not only cute, but provide valuable, beautiful wool too, and products are available to purchase. These make excellent keepsakes and gifts for friends and family.
Villiersdorp has a rich history, thanks to its being established back in 1843. It was inhabited mainly by the French Huguenots, who settled here and set up a veritable infrastructure that formed the basis of the modern society. The museums, art galleries and architecture of the village all testify to this. These are a delight to explore, immersing visitors in the charming character of the village.
Because of the picturesque serenity of Villiersdorp, it is an ideal base from which to tour the rest of the region, including Cape Town and the famous Cape Winelands. These areas become very busy during peak season, and accommodation becomes scarce. Staying in the Overberg is less crowded, and only an hour away from the Mother City.
