Cape Town Winter, the perfect time to start Bikram Yoga

We all know how wet, windy and ice-cold Cape Town gets in our Winter months between May-September. So why not get up off the couch, put the TV remote down and get moving… in a hot room.  You’re promised sweating, strengthening of your body and spine and oodles more health benefits.

For the newbies, Bikram Yoga is a series of 26 postures performed in a heated room with humidity too.   Your body becomes wondrously more flexible in the heat allowing you to go deeper into poses, reduces the risk of injury and helps release toxins from your body.  What are you waiting for, grab your mat, towel and get sweaty and healthy.

Jai Yoga, Seapoint

A lady by the name of Jax opened this studio in Cape Town and offers other forms of yoga too including Pregnancy Yoga, Ecstatic dance and Asthanga Yoga.  She has been practicing yoga since 1993 when she started on a path of self-healing through yoga.  The Bikram classes start with deep breathing, move into standing sets which improve your balance and lastly move onto the floor to assist with flexibility.

Yoga Spirit, Constantia

For the South Suburbs dwellers who want to get hot in their own neighbourhood, visit Yoga Spirit in Constantia Village.   They are a hot yoga studio offerings classes to all.  They believe that yoga is a “extraordinary tool for restoring balance and health” and they are keen to share it with all of you.  There are Bikram classes some mornings at 10am and evenings at 6pm.

Yo Yoga, Claremont

Yo Yoga offers a happy, healthy studio where you can be yourself and sweat it out in their hot yoga studio.  They offer 90 and 60 minutes Bikram classes.  The earliest class starts at 6am and the last class is at 7:30am.  Starting the day with Bikram will do wonders for your energy levels during the day at work.  And if you’re an evening exerciser, bring your sweats and get ready to tone your muscles and maintain a healthy weight overtime and is the best stress reliever.

Hot Dog Yoga Studio, Sea Point

If you’re looking for a studio with a view, this is a good bet.  Hot Dog yoga has two studios with views overlooking the mountain and the ocean.  They boast a green, tranquil and supportive studio.  Some of their yoga etiquette includes practicing on an empty stomach, not wearing strong perfume and wearing form-fitting workout clothing to class. Most of their Bikram classes run at night, except on a Saturday morning.

The Yoga Life, De Waterkant

The Yoga Life studio believes in changing in the world, one breath at a time.  They offer heat and unheated yoga.  Their Bikram classes run in the morning, during lunch time and in the evening.  So you can break away from the chilly office for a revitalizing midday class and return to the desk relaxed and warmer.  They offer teacher training and focus on “ one’s relationship to the posture’ instead of trying to ‘do the posture correctly”.
